Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional, artistic lifestyle by wanderers or adventurers who often find themselves surrounded by like-minded people. The region of Bohemia has been a source of inspiration for artists for centuries. Fashion and culture based on the wandering life has never been more popular than today.

What better way to capture the essence of the wanderer than with film and paper from Bohemia! FOMA BOHEMIA Ltd., headquartered in the city of Hradec Králové, in East Bohemia, outside of Prague, has been making photographic supplies for almost 100 years. The factory has been through several name changes, since its opening.

FOTOCHEMA opened the factory in 1921, producing FOMA branded photo-sensitized plates and chemicals. In 1990, FOTOCHEMA became FOMA and was run by the state until 1995, when the factory and company were privatized. The name was changed to FOMA BOHEMIA Ltd. and the company, much like the Bohemian adventuring tradition, began to branch out and seek new lands in which to flourish.

The production of black & white photo paper began in 1931 and black & white roll films came one year later. In the late 1940’s, FOTOCHEMA’s product mix was extended to include X-ray films, black & white reversal films, color paper and color negative films. The business was very successful, providing photographic materials to Europe and their neighbors, for many decades.

When FOTOCHEMA became FOMA, in 1990, fundamental changes were made to streamline the factory for the production of black & white photographic supplies, non-destructive recording/testing materials and health service products. These endeavors became the principal mission of the company.

Shortly after FOMA became FOMA BOHEMIA Ltd., they introduced an ISO 9001 quality control management system to ensure the consistent production of the highest quality of materials. Their quality control program is certified annually by an independent audit and they cite their adherence to this standard as one of the main reasons they have seen stable growth in volume and reach, over the past 20 years. Today, FOMA BOHEMIA’s film and paper is sold in over 90 countries.

When Freestyle found FOMA, we knew we had found a diamond in the rough. The North American market had not had a new line of film and paper introduced in a very long time and we wanted to be a part of their long tradition. Freestyle began importing their goods en masse and became the official U.S. Distributor of one of the oldest, continually produced lines of photo products in the world.

Currently, FOMA BOHEMIA Ltd. continues to manufacture high-quality black & white film, paper and chemicals with no plans to slow down. With their own factory, formulas and almost a century of experience, FOMA remains one of the last traditional manufacturers of photosensitive materials in the world and is well-positioned for a long and prosperous future. We are proud partners of FOMA BOHEMIA and love sharing their passion for the craft (and their products) with our customers.

FOMA, the tradition continues!
