THE JURORS’ SELECTION PROCESS

We asked our esteemed jurors to share their perspectives to facilitate the applicant’s choices and to gain some insight into their processes.

Mazie Harris, Asst. Curator, J.Paul Getty Museum

“I generally review the work first and then read the artist’s statement and look back over the work again.

I’m interested in what’s communicated visually and in the degree to which what I’m seeing matches up with what the photographer had in mind during the editing process.”

Dewi Lewis, Publisher, Dewi Lewis Publishing
“For me, the artist should always be presenting what they believe in. I don’t believe that a photographer should ever be tailoring their work to me or to any judge. They should show me what THEY want me to see NOT what they think I will want to see.”

Siohbán Bohnacker, Senior Photo Editor, The New Yorker
“Know your audience: be sure to read the juror bios. Entering into competitions gives you a unique opportunity to have your work seen by a diverse set of professionals, and also introduces you to magazines, museums, agencies and so on…”
